Peter & Dee Lindon and Derek & Celia Oram have reached the final of the 2016 Crockfords Cup beating 2 seeds on the way. Sadly Derek & Celia are unavailable for the final but their places will be taken by Tim Rees & Steve Eginton. We wish them Good Luck in the Final.
Well done to Carole & Herb Mueller, David Perkins & Phil Thornton on winning the Perkins Cup in the Teams event. Runners up were Ed Scerri, Dick Davey, Richard Hillman & Richard Bowdery with Heather & Matthew Tan, David Patterson & Brian Geary in 3rd place. 11 teams competed. This was the last event of the current "season". Enjoy the "summer" - see you all in October.
Congratulations to Steve Lynch & Paul Dolphin - joint winners of the John Pares Cup in the 2015-16 Victor Ludorum competition. This is awarded to the player(s) who achieve the greatest success in the County's qualifying events over the course of a season. The result, however, had to wait for the outcome of the Teams event. Dick Davey could have overtaken Steve & Paul and retained the Cup had his team come 1st instead of 2nd in the Teams - so Dick ended in 3rd place in the VL.
The Reading A team - winners of the B&B League of Eight - have gone on to win the Final of the Garden Cities Trophy (the EBU's inter-county teams of eight competition). Reading’s impressive winning score of 114 VP was the second highest score, and the winning margin over 2nd placed Cambridge on 99 VP was third largest margin of victory, both since 1990 – the point at which the competition switched from four teams to eight in the final. Well done to James Bond, Pat Dowdeswell, Mike Perkins, Ian Reissmann, Tim Rees, Chris Cooper, Jonny Richards and Jim Chapman. The final took place on 25th June, and featured eight teams which had won their county championships and then progressed from the qualifying round which had been played in May. Click for results.
Graduate League: Seven teams, the same as last year, took part and, in a close finish, Jane Morris’ DOMPF team (Jan Przybys, Pamela King, Jane Morris & Peter Duncan - in photo L-R) defeated the defending champions David Genders' Grand Slam – it all depended on one slam hand in their head-to-head match! Both of these teams are expecting to join two teams from the 2014/5 Graduate League in Division 4 of the Brown Cup next year, so fulfilling one of the objectives when the Graduate League was founded 4 years ago.
Student League: Six teams, one more than last year, from three different bridge classes, took part and the winners were Hilary Rouse’s Not Vulnerable team (Mark Taylor, David King, Hilary Rouse, Caroline Hunt in photo L-R, plus Andy Graham & Val Karruck) taught by Rob Wilkinson at the Bridge School at Gerrards Cross.
End-of-Season Event: At the end of the season, the two leagues get together for a celebration pairs match. This was won by Anne Byles & Barbara Gibbs, and joint runners-up were Bill Astles & Mark Bannister and Peter Duncan & Pamela King.

The Committee would like to thank those members who responded to the recent online survey regarding the AGM and the suggestion of a "Berks & Bucks Day". The response was disappointing, and as the planning of next year's programme was well advanced, we are not incorporating a B&B Day into that calendar. We have, however, moved the AGM to an event which we hope will attract a larger attendance.
Congratulations to Rob Wilkinson, Colin Johns, Paul Dolphin & Steve Lynch (Bourne End) on winning the Committee Cup - by a significant margin. Runners-up were Barry Read, Paul Cockayne, Plilip Steward & Derek Johnson (Ascot) with John Crook, Norma Allen, James Roy & Marion Fleming (Loddon Vale) in 3rd place and also winning the 1st Session prize. The Final of the Tollemach Cup was held in West Bromwich over 13-14 Feb, with Berks & Bucks team comprising - Barry Myers, Sally Brock, Ed Scerri, Gary Jones, Tim Rees, John Howard, Andrew Murphy & Richard Bowdery and Captain Dick Davey.
Session 1: The team lost their first match to London 4-16 mainly due to a thin slam bid and made by both London pairs with one of our pairs going down and the other not bidding it. They bounced back in the second match against Middlesex (the holders) winning 16-4 (15-5 after appeal) so lay mid-table after the first session. Unfortunately, Sally has had to pull out due to a family illness, so Dick steps in to partner Barry.
Session 2: 2 close matches. Lost 11-9 to Manchester, but then won 11-9 against Worcestershire. So overnight score is 39 VPs, one below average.
Session 3: Started with a 16-4 win against Yorkshire, moving the team up to 4th, but then lost the final 2 matches 4-16 to Kent and 1-19 to Surrey. So a disappointing finish in sixth place.
Colin Simpson was a member of the winning team in the Senior Trials and will now represent England in the European Championships to be held in Budapest in June. Well Done & Good Luck.
24 pairs played in the Friendly Swiss Pairs event. Winners of the Pat Husband Trophy (by an impressive margin) were Jane Morris & Nigel Thompson. (Jane plays in the Graduate League which is run by Nigel. This was the first time they had played together.) Second place was closely contested up to the final round, at which stage Liz Hayton & Addis Page claimed the place, with Pat & Richard Chantler in 3rd place. Well done to all.
