Notification of Special Meeting: Aurora Bridge Club
Date: Wednesday, July 8th, 2026
Time: 11:00 AM
Location: Newmarket Veterans Association (NVA), 406 Millard Ave, Newmarket, ON
Based on your strong feedback, the Board is actively negotiating a lease for our preferred venue. To keep this momentum and close negotiations without delay, we are proactively planning our next steps. We anticipate that a Special Meeting of the members will soon be needed. As our Constitution requires two weeks' notice for such a meeting, we are providing this notification now to ensure we can gather without administrative delays. This ensures we can finalize next steps and take immediate action the moment negotiations conclude.
Please accept this message as the official notice for that Special Meeting.
Further details will be provided after we next hear back from the Landlord.
We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to seeing you there.
The Board of Directors

Director, Please!
Keep in mind the Director is your friend. Calling the Director is not punishment. One does not call the director ON the opponents. One calls the director to assess options associated with irregularities, and to do so from an unbiased perspective. A Director should be called at the first opportunity to do so when things have gone amiss at the table. Please do not try to make rulings on your own at the table.
A call is made to ensure:
-
That no unfair advantage is obtained by inadvertent violations of procedure.
-
That all infractions are handled in a fair, equitable, and consistent manner.
There are two types of ruling that the Director may be required to make: Book Rulings, where there is a clear course of action; and Judgement Decisions where there is an element of discretion. Book Rulings apply to the mechanics of the game: calls, leads or plays out of turn; insufficient bids; revokes; a defender's exposed card; or a disputed claim. Even in these cases, which may seem to be simple situations, the Laws of Duplicate Bridge can be surprisingly complex and it is mandatory to call the Director.
Book Rulings are made and applied immediately at the table. Judgement Decisions apply to situations that are less clear cut, and it may not be obvious what infringement has occurred or whether an unfair advantage has been gained. These include:
a) Corrected or conflicting information regarding a call or play by either member of a partnership, including Alerts and Announcements (see * below).
b) When a player can not or will not answer questions about a call or play.
c) A discussion overheard about a board at another table.
d) A bid which may be a Deviation or Psychic Bid.
e) Possible Unauthorized Information from a hesitation or misuse of the bidding box.
f) Bad behaviour of any sort at your own or another table.
The result of a Judgement Decision may have to wait until the end of the session for the Director to review the full impact of the event, to consult with other directors, and to adjust any scores.
* The declaring side must make any corrections regarding calls, alerts and announcements before the lead is made: the defending side must wait until the play is over.
Please remember that whenever there is any sort of issue at your table, it is important that you do call “Director, please!” and hold up a hand to show the Director from where the call has come. Please do not make your own rulings at the table without calling the Director, regardless of how long you yourself have been playing or directing.
Reminder for All Players
In an effort to avoid scoring errors, it is the responsibility of all who handle the cards to
- Count your hand before and after the play of the hand to ensure you have 13 cards.
- North is responsible to ensure the boards are played in the right direction and in the correct order.
- West is responsible for verifying the scores entered are correct...before pushing the accept button.
- Only scoring errors reported to the director within the first 24 hours will be adjusted.
- Any adjustments made need to be verified by players in both directions before a score will be adjusted. Please take the time to review your scores by checking results on our webpage.
It's Not Too Late:
If you missed the membership drive in May, please contact Janice Colangelo, janice.colangelo21@gmail.com. Directors can also take your membership renewal when you pay for your game fee.
We are a member owned club and our annual membership fee will remain unchanged at $20. These fees are directed towards our annual insurance ($1,000 per year) and capital improvements (e.g. our new game computer).
Thank you for being an Aurora Bridge Club member and building our community of like-minded people encouraging fun, friendship and connection while sharing our passion for this great game of bridge.
