The choir was founded in 1921 and since that date (apart from the war years) has kept alive a continuous tradition of study and performance of a wide range of choral works, from the Renaissance period to the present day.

Our conductor is Matthew Watts, and we are affiliated to ‘Making Music’ (the National Federation of Music Societies). Abbots Langley Singers is a registered charity.

We perform three concerts a year, one at the end of each “school term”. The one before Christmas includes Christmas carols, the other two concerts will often include a light hearted supper concert (popular songs and songs from the shows) while the other concert often includes a larger choral work. We also provide our services at weddings, christenings and funerals where no other choral support is available.

Our concerts are normally given in the Henderson Hall, on the High Street right in the centre of Abbots Langley, or in the beautiful old church of St. Lawrence, a little further out the town, at the junction of St. Lawrence Close and the High Street.

Rehearsals are held at the Methodist Church Hall, Langley Road, Abbots Langley, on Thursday evenings from 8.00pm to 10.00pm with a short break in the middle, breaking for school holidays after each concert.

ALS Music Director, Matthew Watts
Matthew is both a professional conductor and singer, specialising in choral music. He is Musical Director of the Abbots Langley Singers, the New Essex Choral Society (Redbridge Adult Education) and the Sundial Singers (Tower Hamlets Adult Education), together with being the tutor of the Singing Ensemble at Westminster Adult Education Service. Previously he was Musical Director of the prestigious professional choir at Ealing Abbey.
From 1999-2000 Matthew was a Choral Scholar at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church and he continues to sing with professional church choirs in London. He studies singing with the distinguished teacher Lyndon Van Der Pump and runs a successful private singing teaching practice.
Matthew studied music at Glasgow University and was a Choral Scholar in the University Chapel Choir. His first important conducting experience was as Musical Director of Glasgow University Chamber Choir. He went on to be a postgraduate conducting student at both London College of Music and Trinity College of Music, where he won the Ricordi Conducting Prize. In 2002 he studied on the Advanced Conducting Course at Dartington International Summer School.
