The Secretary read out the minutes of the last annual general meeting, which the meeting approved.
2. Matters arising
There were no matters arising.
3. Chairman’s Report.
The Chairman presented the following report.-
It has been a very positive and successful year. We are averaging between 30 and 40 tables per week, our P2P contribution to the E.B.U is the highest in Derbyshire. Much of the increase in numbers is due to the teaching classes which were originally prepared by Hazel Whinfrey, but ably taken on by Ian Roxburgh and Tim Hallam.
The year got off to an excellent start with the 25year celebration dinner held at the Grange in September. When Roy Battelle first proposed this celebration, little did he know the demands that would be made on him by Elaine Coldicott and Jo Bakshi. What a fantastic event, which reflected the time and hard work put into the event by the three of them.
Paddy Olday ran the quiz, again a very successful event, won by the Venkatash family.
We had an enjoyable Away Day at Kedleston Golf Club in February – 64 attended. Another has been arranged for 7th November – maximum number 64.
We plan to arrange three sessions of the Children in Need sims pairs event in November.
We have had some problems with the dealing machine, thanks to Simon Jackson for sorting these. We have a dealing roster with each member doing the job for two months, several people have joined this year and we would welcome more volunteers.
We will soon be using pre-dealt boards at all sessions.
Sometimes the computers and bridgemates have not behaved as we might wish, and we purchased a new server. As more T.D. s gain experience of and confidence with the systems, problems should reduce.
Two further members have qualified as T.Ds, congratulations to Celia Shaw and Alistair McCance. We are pleased to announce that Sue and Peter Illsley are planning to undertake a T.D course at Sheffield in September /October, and should be qualified by the end of 2016.
The appearance of the building has been greatly improved by the external painting, carried out by Ian Roxburgh, Tim Hallam and Janet Laffin. Ian and Jane Roxburgh have done a fantastic job with planters and hanging baskets, and all are thanked sincerely.
Paddy Olday and her team continue to provide jams enabling us to contribute to the Nightingdale MacMillan charity.
May I wish the club every success for the coming year.
Arnold Chandler as Chairman of DCBA congratulated the Club on it’s success and confirmed that it is the most active bridge club in Derbyshire, the only one running four sessions.
4. Secretary’s Report.
The Secretary reported that current members at 31st May were 177, consistent with last year’s figure of 179.
There were four meetings since the last A.G.M. all well attended, and some lively discussions were held.
At the last A.G.M David Frape and Valerie Norris were elected to the committee making ten members. Sadly Ian Roxburgh resigned during the year, and David Frape has decided not to stand for re-election. Both ae thanked for their contributions whilst on the committee. I would just like to thank all members for their support and hard work during the year, and in particular Jo. Bakhi for organizing the web-site and making it the useful tool it is.
5. Treasurer’s Report
The Treasurer presented the accounts for the year ended 31st May 2016, and explained individual items. Total income was £13,277 compared to £12,770 last year, and expenses £14,554 compared to £9216 previously. The largest one-off expense was £3,616 for the 25 year celebration. Overall there was a small deficit of £1,277 compared to a surplus of £3,338 previously. Total funds in hand were £13,083 compared to £14,360 last year.
The accounts were approved by the meeting.
The committee has decided to leave the joining fee as £10, but thanks to the healthy financial position to reduce subscriptions to £5, for a two year period. Subscriptions are now due.
