Congratulations to the 220 players who took part in CAFE BRIDGE GUILDFORD and a Big Thank You for helping to raise over £4500 for Shooting Star Chase and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

We had lots of fun playing in the 13 restaurants and thank you to those restaurants for contributing to the Charities and providing some excellent lunches.

The restaurants deserve a mention: All Bar One, Loch Fyne, Olivo, The Keep, La Casita, Jamies and Ask and we added new restaurants this year The Three Pigeons, March Hare, Al Vicolo, White House, Britannia and Weyside

An enormous contribution was made by a whole team of volunteers and organisers and special mention must be made to some key people:

Graeme Attridge - A moving and informative talk on the wonderful work of CRY

Jacqueline Davis - Volunteer Ambassador who not only gave a superb talk but with Graeme worked tirelessly all day.

Lynn - Organiser extraodinaire who obtained 220 players and communicated with them over many months

Jane and Janette - Selected and organised the 13 restaurants to provide the facilities and tasty lunches

Victor, Caroline and Trevor- Tireless scorers who introduced everyone to the BriAn APP and scoring system

Marilyn - created a mammoth raffle with some excellent prizes

Alan, Bob and Pippa who now know how to prepare 275 different colour boards, with travelers and stuff them into bags for distribution to 13 restaurants.

Trevor and Lynn - the PR and pictures

Sally, Judith, Rebecca, Barbara, robert Julia who helped on the day with RAFFLE and setting up restaurants etc. If anyone has been left out it is Douglas's fault!

Of course a big congratulations to Paul Hainsworth and Terry Welsh who not only won the event but thoroughly enjoyed the bubbly and drinks at the prize giving. Full results are in the Results section on this website.

We expect to be sold out again next year even though there are plans to expand to 240 players and 15 restaurants, so if you have not participated before please ensure we have your email address early. More information will be in this CAFE BRIDGE section.

  CAFE BRIDGE GUILDFORD 2014
CAFE BRIDGE GUILDFORD 2014

Another Triumph for Café Bridge Guildford!

Started by Bob Fuller and our very own Polly in 2011, this charitable event is now in its third year and becoming more and more popular. As most of you will know, the two charities chosen this year were Shooting Star Chase and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), for which over £2,000 was raised. Well done to all the players who made this event such a success.

The team of organisers and helpers this year consisted of Michele Perry, Polly Youngs, Eddie Briggs, Jane Nind, Brenda Elshaw, Judy Gaman, Wendy Megevney, Sally Paget-Brown, Brenda Rees and Trevor Hobson and not seen on the day, but who created all the personalised programmes and travellers behind the scenes, the one and only Bob Fuller. If anyone as been left out it is Douglas's fault! There were also 7 venue gurus!

A big thanks to Brenda  (with Judy as her right-hand ‘man’) for scoring all day, on the day, with scarcely an opportunity to draw breath as the ‘runners’, Wendy, rushed around gathering the travellers to take back to the hub of operations – All Bar One.

Huge congratulations and thanks all round.

Registration began at 10.15 in the morning, with coffee, where Sally and Brenda were selling raffle tickets and Michele coped calmly with last-minute cancellations. Before long the requisite 56 pairs were assembled, and we were off.

Seven carefully selected restaurants in the town – All Bar One, Loch Fyne, Olivo, the Keep, Bills in the Angel, Ask and Café Rouge – generously acted as the host venues and did us proud while the players made their carefully orchestrated way from one restaurant to another to play cards, eat, drink and have fun.

At the start of the day each pair was given a personalized printed programme, so they knew exactly where to go when and, most importantly, in which of the seven restaurants they were going to have lunch! Coffee and drinks were of course also available in each restaurant throughout the day.

Then, at 4pm, all the players, by now in high spirits (if not from their superb card play then from the wine), reconvened back at headquarters in All Bar One for the results and prize giving.

A lot of hard work was put into this event, especially by Michele, who managed all the entries and players, but the congratulations that flowed in and, of course, the money raised, made it all worthwhile.

If you know anyone who wishes to enjoy the wonderful Café culture in Guildford, Douglas is providing Free Bridge Taster Sessions on Tuesday mornings at 10am in Harris & Hoole, North Street, during the month of October. Contact him on  07801 989630 douglaswright@3countiesbridge.com for details.
