As you probably realise putting your name on the website doesn't get you into the Tournament!
It just gives HIWCBA some idea of numbers, and ensures HIWCBA have your alias.
To actually enter the event please follow the instructions 'Playing in HIWCBA Online Pairs' from our tournament director, Mike Kinsey, below.
Please also familiarise yourself with the HIWCBA general BBO instructions, also below.
If you have any issues, please e-mail wmkinsey@yahoo.co.uk

Playing in HIWCBA Online Pairs

HIWCBA events are ‘closed.’ That way we can stop random people joining in.
So to play in any of our events you need to make sure we know your BBO alias.
But putting your name on the website, or e-mailing me doesn’t get you into the Tournament!
To actually enter the event you will have to register on BBO.
Registration will open automatically two hours before the start time.
Log on to BBO, select 'Competitive', select 'All Tournaments' select 'Pending'
You can either scroll down to find us, (they are in starting time order)
Or you can search on HIW.
Then click on the Tournament, not the host.
Now you will be asked to register with a partner (who will need to be on-line), or buy a robot partner.
If you don't have a partner you can put your alias in at the Partnership Desk.
And you will need some BB$s
They can be purchased through the BB$ button (top right) on either the home page or when you have logged in.
You can pay with a credit card or PayPal.
This is all covered in one of Paul Gipson's excellent videos here
Evenings are busy on BBO. So if you are playing then, please log-on in good time.
Once logged on and registered, you hang around wondering what is happening!
Hopefully at, or just after, the start time, you will be magically whisked to a table, and you're off!
Please note the BBO protocol is to alert your own bids not partners.
This takes a bit of getting used to, but it works well.
Also if you want to ask supplementary questions address them to the alerter in Private Chat.
Using Table Chat potentially creates UI.

Another issue can be mis-clicks.
As a TD they are a nightmare to police, but for now, I will allow them.
However it is entirely a matter for your opponents.
If you mis-click you can request an undo.
Now your opponents can 'accept' or 'reject.' I am not going to intervene.
You may wish to reduce your chance of mis-clicking by changing your settings.
Log-on, 'Account' 'Settings' 'Playing' turn on 'Confirm Bids'/ 'Confirm Cards'
If you are using a tablet, or laptop with touch-pad, this is recommended.
It is possible in BBO to create and use convention cards.
But a lot of players don't do this. It’s not the end of the world.
However it is a good idea to prepare the basics of your system, copy onto your clipboard, then paste to 'Chat' 'Table' when you go to a new table.
We will be playing what are called Clocked Rounds.
That means you will get 7 or 8 minutes per board, and the system will move you on at the end of the round.
BBO will ask the robots to finish the hand if you are still playing (they are very fast!)
If you don't think that outcome is fair, you can send TD a message.
(The result can be seen in your History tab.)
BBO doesn’t allow half-tables. It is possible you may start against a pair labelled ‘Sit Out.’  Don’t leave the table! The ‘Sit Outs’ will be replaced pretty quickly by two substitutes. I invite them to play and will try and find some suitable ones. But you may find yourselves playing against strangers!
At the end of the session provisional results will appear as a pop-up on your screen.
Check them.
BBO has a time limit of 20 minutes in which TD can make adjustments.
After that the results are fixed.
With luck, I will then upload to the HIW Website.
And a UMS file will go the EBU, so you may get master points.

HIWCBA General BBO Instructions

HIWCBA are hosting our Pairs Events on BBO.
Therefore to play in any of our events you need to have a presence on BBO.
Paul Gipson has produced an excellent of videos covering everything you need to know about using BBO here
It’s worth dipping in and watching a number of these, even if you are an old hand at BBO.
There are some notable differences between on-line bridge and playing in a club.
Firstly Alerting and Announcing.
Unlike F2F, on BBO you self alert, and explain.
Partner doesn't get to see what you have said, so there is no UI.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is pretty good.
Better than chatting to the table, then there is lots of potential for UI!
The video here is very good and covers it well.
Secondly is System Cards.
They are not widely used on BBO.
Everyone assumes 2/1 or SAYC, but you can fill one in: see here
Alternatively you may want to have a simple description of you system.
This is particularly useful if you are playing Pairs.
Type a simple description: '5cd M, better m, 12-14NT  3wk twos' etc and the copy onto the clipboard.
Every time you sit at a new table CtrlV this via chat to the Table.
