Enfield Duplicate Bridge Club
Release 2.19q
Hosting
Introduction

Enfield Duplicate Bridge Club runs a hosting system so that players who come without a partner are guaranteed a game.  The hosting system operates on all regular Monday and Thursday 'Pairs' club nights but not on 'Teams' nights - currently the first Thursday and third Monday of each month - or for special events (see the calendar on this website).

The host is shown on the club calendar (or displayed as 'N/A' when there is no host).

How it Works

All members are asked to commit to one evening per 'cycle' when they will be prepared to 'pair up' with a player who arrives without a partner unless there is an even number of such players who will then pair up with each other and the host will not play that evening.

The host will not be required to pay table-money that evening (if they play) or for their next visit (if they don't play).

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Should I come with my regular partner when I am the Host?
  • So long as your partner does not mind pairing up with one of the 'singles' then yes.  The danger of leaving partner at home is that if there turns out to be an even number of singles then the Host will have to go home when, if his / her partner had been there, they would both have had a game!

  • Can I be excused from the 'Host Rota' because <insert reason here>?
  • Although hosting is voluntary, we strongly encourage everyone to take a turn.  Any member that does not partake in the scheme effectively increases the frequency of hosting for those that do.

  • Anything else?
  • There is strong evidence to suggest that one of the reasons for decreasing participation at bridge clubs up and down the country is that players who find themselves without a partner - maybe because they are new to the area or maybe something more short-term such as their regular partner suddenly becoming unavailable - is that 'singles' are unable to get a game at many clubs.  Even if you, yourself, never come alone, by supporting the hosting system, you are helping to increase general participation in the game we all love.

  • OK.  That all sounds very reasonable.  How do I get myself onto the rota?
  • Please either email the Host Manager, Steve Brink or speak to him in person at a club night.  You can check the calendar on this site to see what slots are available.
